Defending iromwoman champion Courtney Hancock edges out rival Liz Pluimers on the Gold Coast

DEFENDING champion Courtney Hancock has lived up to pre-race expectations by drawing first blood in the opening round of the 2011/2012 professional ironwoman series at Surfers Paradise.

Hancock resumed her rivalry with last season’s runner up Liz Pluimers in the testing endure race with the pair neck and neck for most of the race.

But using her surf skills Hancock grabbed a crucial edge over her rival in the final surf ski leg of the 45 minute enduro.

It proved a winning move with Hancock crossing the line 12 seconds ahead of Pluimers for the round one honours In the six round series.

Veteran Kristyl Smith finished third in the race.
